The ISO (Insurance Services Office) has completed their assessment of the Towanda Fire Department. The City fire protection improved from a class 6 to a class 5. The rural protected areas improved from a class 8B to a class 6.
What follows is an explanation of the recent ISO classification for the Towanda Fire Department. Other than being complicated, it’s all good news as we improved in all areas. The ratings go into effect November 1, 2018.
ISO’s rating system ranges from a 1 to a 10 with 1 being the best and 10 they consider no fire protection. ISO is focused on structures and not vehicles, grass, or crops.
The Towanda Fire Department is currently a class 6/8B. The 6 applies to everything within 5 road miles of the fire station and 1000 feet of a fire hydrant. The 8B applies to everything within 5 road miles not within 1000 feet of a credible fire hydrant. All properties more than 5 road miles are a class 10.
The new Fire Protection Service Area rating is 5. This area is basically everything within 5 road miles of the fire station AND 1000 feet of a credible fire hydrant.
The new rural rating (Fire Department Supply or “hauled water”) rating is 6/10. The 6 applies to everything within 5 road miles of the fire station NOT within 1000 feet of a credible fire hydrant. Therefore properties not within 1000 of a credible fire hydrant, but within 5 miles of the station improved from an 8B to a class 6. The 10 applies to properties beyond 5 miles, but…see next paragraph.
Because we have a hauled water rating, we automatically have a class 10W for the properties beyond 5 miles up to 7 miles from the station. By their assessment, we can provide fire protection (though minimal) out to 7 road miles.
We also have a class 10 for properties beyond 7 miles, but this does not apply since all of our district is now within 7 miles of the station.
This is good news for our citizens. After November 1, they may qualify for lower insurance premiums. This will not be automatic. People need to call their agents to ask about the new rating.
